BAHAWALPUR: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has served notices on over 300 owners of benami properties so far in Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar districts.
This was stated by Inland Revenue Bahawalpur region Chief Commissioner Dr Ashfaq Ahmed Tunio.
Talking to Dawn on Monday, he said that the notices were issued in pursuance of the federal government’s decision after receiving detailed records of the properties from the respective deputy commissioners and other revenue department officials.
The FBR benami commissioner has started dispatching notices to the property owners in Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar districts while the records of such properties in the remaining districts of Bahawalpur Regional Tax Office, Rahim Yar Khan and Lodhran, were yet to be received by thecommissioner.
He added that notices were issued to 150 benami property owners in Bahawalpur and 175 in Bahawalnagar districts, while more properties were expected to be detected in these two districts as the scrutiny of revenue record was under way.
Dr Tunio also revealed the alleged embezzlement of millions of rupees of sales tax in the division and involvement of over 12 big fish against whom action was being taken by the board.
He claimed that the FBR during the current calendar year unearthed a fraud of over Rs190 million in the head of sales tax by a fake textile mills in Harunabad of Bahawalnagar district. A notable lawyer and 12 large capitalists of the country were involved in this embezzlement against whom action was being taken. The lawyer has been blacklisted, he added.
Besides, Dr Tunio further said, another fraud in sales tax worth Rs80 million in another industrial concern had been detected by the FBR and action against those involved was in the pipeline.
