Irrigation EXEN Held For Bogus Appointments


SHEIKHUPURA: The anti-corruption establishment (ACE) on Wednesday arrested an irrigation department executive engineer (EXEN) in bogus appointments of grade-IV employees during his tenure since 2016 to 2017.

The official, Atif, was remanded in ACE custody for four days. The official had appointed 72 employees in Upper Chenab Canal Department without getting approval from higher authorities. The EXEN had earned Rs25 million as illegal gratification, besides causing huge loss to the exchequer in the form of salaries.

The union had brought the matter into the notice of higher authorities and a probe was conducted. The EXEN was found guilty and 72 employees appointed by him were sacked. The department later handed over the matter to ACE. Further investigation is under way.

A large number of people visited the shrine to pay tribute to him.

Besides Heer-reciting competition, other cultural events such as qawalis and mushairas were held on the occasion. The Heer-reciting competition was won by a party hailing from Shorkot, Jhang.
