Three Arrested In Fake Sims Case

GUJRANWALA: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested three people, including the owner of a franchise, for activating fake mobile phone SIMs (subscriber identity modules) in Gujranwala on Friday.

Officials recovered 10,000 SIMs, eight biometric machines, 10 laptops and 13 gateway exchanges from them. The FIA registered a case against them.

FIA Deputy Director Asif Iqbal told Dawn the FIA received complaints that SIMs registered in their names were being frequently used by the gangsters for calling to account holders of banks for seeking information by introducing themselves as officials of army and banks.

Luqman (owner of Telenor franchise) Khuram and Shums, of Rahwali, were involved in stealing data from National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) and using the stolen data in activating fake SIMs.

They had been doing so for the last three years. They would activate around 5,000 SIMs per month and sell them to criminals for Rs400 each.
